Graphs of the Week (10/4/2021)

How do UFC fights end? We were inspired by the Kevin Holland headbutt this past weekend to look into it (If you didn’t watch the headbutt or the ensuing referee deliberation we highly recommend you check it out). Over the history of the UFC, we found that a majority of fights have ended via finish (KO/ TKO or submission) and almost all of the rest ended via decision.

How have the stats changed over time? Over the past 5 years, we have seen a majority of fights end via decision. Although we don’t have a definitive answer for why the percentage of decisions have increased, our assumption is that fighters have adopted more rigorous training as the sport has modernized, which has driven an increase in technical point fighting over riskier strategies.
